The Field is Narrowing: Down to the Final Two! Amateur Golf Ball Challenge Part 3

The quest for the “One Ball” is heating up in my amateur golf ball challenge. As I work toward dropping my average from 98.4 to 92, I’ve realized that confidence over the ball is just as important as the stats on the box. After another round of testing and some serious reflection on my last outing, I’ve made some tough cuts.

If I’m going to protect my back and keep my swing smooth, the equipment has to cooperate.

If you missed part 1 and part 2, check them out.

The First Cut: Srixon Soft Feel

This might surprise some people because the Srixon performed well around the greens, but I’m officially moving on from it.

  • The Reason: Even though it’s called “Soft Feel,” to my hands, it felt like hitting a rock. When you’re managing a herniated disk and limited flexibility, you want a ball that feels like it’s compressing, not one that sends a “crack” of vibration up the shaft.
  • The Lesson: Performance is great, but feel is personal. If I don’t like the sound or the feedback at impact, it’s not the ball for me.

The Second Cut: Titleist Tour Soft

I really wanted to love this one. It’s a Titleist, after all! But after three holes of testing, it’s the second ball to leave my bag.

  • The Reason: I just couldn’t find my rhythm with it. Between losing one to that stubborn 7-wood pull and a general lack of confidence standing over it, the “vibe” wasn’t there.
  • The Lesson: A high-handicapper’s greatest enemy is doubt. If a ball makes me feel uneasy before I even take the club back, it’s going to lead to a tentative swing—and that’s how scores balloon.

The Championship Matchup: Callaway vs. Bridgestone

We are down to the final two contenders for my official season ball:

  1. Callaway 2023 Supersoft: This is the current frontrunner. It felt right, flew straight, and gave me that “high-level confidence” I’m looking for.
  2. Bridgestone e6: Despite losing one in the woods, the e6 was “dead straight” off the driver. It’s earned one more shot to prove it can handle the pressure.

Next Steps for the Mid-Range Swing

I’ll be taking these two finalists out for a head-to-head “Match Play” round. No distractions—just the Supersoft and the e6 battling it out to see which one will help me chase that sub-92 scoring average when the season officially opens in April.

I’ve narrowed it down to Callaway and Bridgestone. If you were in my shoes—looking for a straight flight and a soft feel to save your back—which one would you put in the bag?
